Urinary tract infections in women

This service is available to women, aged 16 to 64 years.

The NHS Pharmacy First scheme is here to help women understand and get treatment for simple urinary tract infections.

What is a urinary tract infection?

A urinary tract infection (UTI) is when any part of the urinary system becomes infected. The urinary system includes your kidneys, ureters, bladder and urethra. Most UTIs involve the lower urinary tract, your bladder and urethra.

UTI symptoms

Not all UTIs will have symptoms, but when they do, they may include:

• Constantly feeling the need to urinate
• Burning sensation whilst urinating
• Needing to urinate more often
• Passing smaller amounts of urine
• Cloudly looking urine
• Signs of blood in urine
• Strong-smelling urine
• Pelvic pain

Treatments

If our pharmacist confirms you are suffering from a UTI, they will be able to supply you with treatment during your appointment. You will not need to visit your GP for further diagnosis or a prescription.
