Sore Throat
Sore throats
The NHS Pharmacy First scheme is here to help you understand and get treatment for sore throats.
Sore throats is a very common condition and can cause irritation when swallowing. It’s often nothing to worry about and symptoms will decrease within a few days.
If you have a bacterial throat infection, you will need treatment to clear up the condition.
Helping a sore throat
If you have a sore throat, there are a number of steps to take before seeking treatment to alleviate symptoms:
- Drinks plenty of water
- Avoid hot drinks
- Eat cool and soothing foods (such as yoghurts)
- Over-the-counter lozenges*
*always ensure that lozenges are suitable for the patient – don’t give a child anything which may pose a choking hazard.
Treatments
Our pharmacist will be able to help diagnose your sore throat. They can offer advice and over-the-counter products, as well as provide treatment without the need to visit your GP for further diagnosis or a prescription.
